The LDS Mormon Church hides child sex abuse

The Mormons covered up child sex abuse at their church in 1990

This first paragraph is the band-aid coming off. Please push through and understand my words:

Courtney* was sexually abused when she was 7 years old. The abusers were a brother and sister. The child sex abuse (CSA) took place in our parent’s house It started in my bedroom. I am her brother. I was 6 years old. The two abusers r*ped Courtney and me. One of the same abusers sexually abused another of our siblings, our younger brother Murph*. It happened in a shed near the house.

Our mother was told about sexual abuse by the school in 1984. She did not report the sexual abuse to the authorities. Click here to read about this event.

The LDS Mormon Bishop frowns and faces away from his wife, the Relief Society President. She is frowning, arms crossed protectively over her chest.
My father, The Bishop and my mother, The Relief Society President. This photo is typical them. Not happy. ~2008. Also pictured, The Mormon Cop who quashed the first Child Protective Services investigation.

In 1990, we reported the abuse to my teacher. My teacher did the right thing and reported my parents to Child Protective Services. The Mormons, aka The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, brought in a Dirty Cop to quash the investigation. CPS did not learn of the sexual and physical abuse my sister and I suffered from 1984 to 1990.

The dirty Mormon cop (son of the Stake Patriarch) was key to quashing the Child Protective Services (CPS) investigation. The Church overwhelmed the limited resources of our teacher and CPS. Ms. Alan*, thank you for trying so hard to save us. Click here to read about the 1990 cover up.

In 1994, I attempted suicide. I was found and told that I was “too stupid to kill myself”. I called Child Protective Services myself. The Mormons hid me from CPS in another Mormon’s home. It met the legal definition of kidnapping. CPS never found me or my mangled arm. Click here to read about the Mormon couple that hid me.

The Mormon Church worked diligently to prevent me and Courtney* from talking to the authorities because of the child sex abuse. Would Courtney have died 3 months after giving birth if the Mormon Church had allowed her to receive rape & trauma counseling in 1990? Click here to read about Courtney’s death.

Author Joseph*, Courtney* holding Murph*. 4 short years later the three of us would be harmed by the abusers.

To the abused. I believe you. I see you. Here is my advice:

If you are a minor child and are being harmed in your LDS Mormon home or church, tell an adult that does not go to your church. Start with your teacher. If your teacher goes to your church, tell your school nurse. Tell your school principal. Tell your school police officer. You can call the National Sex Abuse Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE. That is 1-800-656-4673.

Harm could be hitting, slapping, pushing, or other unloving physical contact.

Harm could also be verbal abuse.

Harm can be sexual abuse or rape.

All of these different abuses are defined by the country / state / province / city that you live in. The police need to determine what kind of abuse it is. Do not let anyone tell you that your abuse did not happen. Do not let anyone tell you that your abuse wasn’t as bad as it seemed. That is for the victim, their advocates, and legal system to decide. The sooner they investigate, the sooner you will have resolution. The Church does not decide what abuse is.

Do not stop telling people until you are safe. Do not stop until the abusers are investigated by the police. Even if the abuser is your Mother, tell the police. Even if the abuser is your Father, brother, sister, cousin… it doesn’t matter who is abusing you, they need to be investigated by the police.

The Church, your bishop or parents may say they will investigate, but it will be to protect the Church – not the victim. I speak from experience. Tell the police that you see at or near your school. If the Police Officer is Mormon, then find a non-member officer.

You can call the National Sex Abuse Hotline at 1-800-656-HOPE. That is 1-800-656-4673. This number is run by RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network).

Do not stop telling people until you are safe from your abusers. Someone will believe you. My teacher believed me and helped me. I hope you find those good people. They are out there, just likely not at a Mormon Church.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint’s leaders, members, and policies enable child sex abuse

Here is an example of a widespread Latter-Day Saint / Mormon sexual abuse cover up. The ‘Boy Scout sex abuse’ timeline demonstrates that the Mormon Church will attempt to cover up child sex abuse using its vast resources:

Aug 4, 2020: Church issues letter urging leaders to not participate in ‘any type of court case’

Dec 29, 2020: Mormon church faces 7 new lawsuits for alleged Boy Scouts sex abuse cover-up in Arizona

Sept 25, 2021: Boy Scouts reach agreement with Mormon Church, insurers in sex abuse case

Sept 8, 2022: Boy Scouts plan to exit bankruptcy approved, signaling end to largest sex abuse case of its kind

Mormons are famous for following a formula when presented with evidence of their dishonesty and abuses. They will deny, minimize, blame others and / or disengage. Do not allow them to do that. Force the conversation. If your child was molested, would a Mormon report it to the police? Or would they “Follow the Prophetand contact the Mormon General Counsel first as instructed in the letter.

I am not asking anyone to persecute Mormons for their beliefs. We are asking that the Mormon Church publicly refute the instruction and allow the social welfare systems to do their work without interference from the Church and its members.

(4) Support local, state, and national politicians who will vote for Anti-SLAAP bills. SLAPP stands for “strategic lawsuits against public participation”. SLAPPs are expensive, baseless legal proceedings that threaten public discourse and silence criticism. The LDS Mormons SLAAP their victims when we go public. SLAPPing is illegal in many states.

If you want to help, consider these organizations.

All of them have values that conflict with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. An organization should not be allowed to call themselves a “church” while their doctrine and policies conflict with human rights’ groups.
